Food Insecurity Beef Project

For the past five years the Pickaway County Community Foundation has purchased the whole lot of market steer from the Pickaway County Fair Junior Livestock Exhibitors. The steer are then locally processed and then delivered to local food pantries and nonprofits that work to fight food insecurity.

2025 Beef Project Overview

In July of 2025, over 6,100 lbs. of beef was delivered to a dozen nonprofit organizations across Pickaway County—an incredible milestone in our shared effort to address food insecurity countywide.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to our incredible partners who made the project a success:

  • The Well Being Foundation’s help funding the project with a $25,000 grant, putting the project’s fundraising over the finishing line for 2025.
  • All of the business and local community members that donated to this project to make this project possible.
  • All the Junior Fair livestock exhibitors that put hard work and dedication into raising their steer throughout the year that allows us to provide high quality and local protein for this project.

Securing high quality protein for friends and neighbors

Over the past four years, the Pickaway County Community Foundation’s Food Insecurities Fund has donated over 61,100 pounds of high-quality, locally raised ground beef to 12 different food pantries across Pickaway County.

More than 240,000 meals distributed to Pickaway County families in need

From Darby to Tarlton, Ashville to New Holland, we’re helping feed countless families in our community. Over the life of the project more than 240,000 meals were put on Pickaway County tables in the community. The need for 2025 is even greater than before.

Raising students and steers

In 2025 alone the Foundation utilized the Food Insecurities Fund, to purchase 14 steers at the Pickaway County Fair. PCCF provided a premium bid of $2.30 per pound to the youth to support their effort for the long-term commitment that a steer project requires. This project’s success would not be possible without the community-driven support that it has received.
